Cheek Augmentation
High cheekbones have always been a desirable feature. For individuals with gaunt or hollow cheeks, cheek augmentation can restore a fuller, more youthful appearance and enhance the natural contours of the face. Cheek augmentation can make the cheekbones appear more prominent which in turn can improve the overall facial balance. This procedure is commonly performed using small implants which are inserted over the cheekbones. Alternately, injectable fillers may be used to temporarily restore volume to the cheeks.
The Cheek Augmentation Procedure
Dr. Mounsey often performs surgical cheek augmentation procedures in one of the hospitals or private clinics in the Toronto area which he is affiliated with. Surgical times average thirty to forty-five minutes and local anesthesia is commonly used. During the surgery, small incisions may be made inside of the upper lip or the lower eyelid. The implant is then inserted through the incision and placed over the cheekbone.
Some amount of swelling and bruising following surgery is normal. Patients may experience decreased ability to move the mouth and lips at first, and restrictions may be temporarily placed on the diet if the incisions were made on the inside of the mouth. Medication can be taken to help alleviate discomfort. Most patients find that they can return to work and most other normal activities within one week.
Cheek Augmentation with Injectable Fillers
Injectable filler procedures are often performed in the office setting with local anesthesia. Dr. Mounsey uses a fine needle to inject the filler into the cheek area. The injection process can take as little as fifteen minutes to complete. While minor bruising or swelling may result, most patients are able to return to work and their normal routine the same or next day.
Commonly used fillers include Sculptra, Radiesse and Juvederm. Fat transfer may also be an option. The duration of results will vary according to the particular filler used. Juvederm often lasts an average of six months, while Sculptra and Radiesse may last up to one to two years.
