Enhance the Chin with Chin Augmentation or Chin Reduction

When the chin is proportionate, it can help to balance out the facial features. A well-defined chin can help to make a large nose appear smaller and the face more refined overall. In fact, chin augmentation is often combined with rhinoplasty for this very reason. Dr. Mounsey performs chin augmentation to build up a small or weak chin and chin reduction to reduce an overly large or prominent chin.

The Chin Augmentation Procedure

Chin augmentation is performed to improve a weak or receding chin with the use of implants. Implants come in a variety of materials, but commonly soft silicone or Gore-Tex implants are used. This surgical procedure may be performed in one of the hospitals or private clinics in the Toronto area which Dr. Mounsey is affiliated with. The surgery takes thirty minutes to an hour to complete and is performed with local anesthesia and sedation or with general anesthesia. A small incision is made which may be located on the inside of the lower lip or on the skin beneath the chin. Dr. Mounsey will then select an implant of the proper size and shape and insert it over the jawbone. The incisions are closed with sutures and the chin may be taped.

The recovery following chin augmentation is fairly minimal and quick. During the first few days post-operatively, patients may experience some discomfort as well as some difficulty smiling and talking. Medication can be taken to alleviate the discomfort. If the incisions are made on the inside of the mouth, some dietary restrictions may be necessary. Most patients are back to normal within a few days and able to return to work within one week.

The Chin Reduction Procedure

Chin reduction surgery can improve a chin that extends too far or appears too prominent. This will create a more pleasing profile and improve the overall facial balance. In most cases, Dr. Mounsey preserves a strong, well-defined chin and jaw line while reducing the chin enough so that it no longer overpowers the other facial features.

Chin reduction is performed in one of the hospitals or private clinics in Toronto with either local anesthesia and sedation or with general anesthesia. The incision is made on the inside of the lip or under the chin. Working through the incision, Dr. Mounsey will reshape and remove a portion of the bone structure to achieve the desired new shape. Liposuction may be performed at the same time for further definition in the chin and neck.

Swelling and bruising may occur following chin reduction, and the swelling may last for up to six weeks. Patients may experience some discomfort and may find movements like talking and smiling difficult at first. Medication can alleviate discomfort. Dietary restrictions may be placed if the incisions are located inside of the mouth. Patients often find that they can return to work within about one week.
