What Makes Ethnic Rhinoplasty Different?

Ethnic rhinoplasty differs from other types of cosmetic rhinoplasty in several ways. First, the surgeon must have a comprehensive understanding of the facial features common to each ethnic group. For example, many Asian-American and African-American patients have noses with wider bases and less sharply defined tips than Caucasian patients. Patients of color may also have thicker skin on the tip of the nose. These differences are important for the doctor to keep in mind as he operates to ensure that the surgery and recovery process proceeds smoothly and that the finished result looks natural.

Second, the surgeon must have a firm grasp on the types of surgical techniques more commonly used to address aesthetic issues that people of color often face. Cartilage may need to be grafted from elsewhere in the body if the patient desires a more defined nose bridge and tip, or an implant may have to be used. Bumps in the nose, common among many of our South Asian-American patients, can be flattened through a procedure in which the surgeon removes a small amount of bone.
