Facial fat transfer provides an alternative to injectable fillers. In this procedure, fat is drawn from another area of the body where there is excess, such as the abdomen, saddle bags or buttocks, and then injected into the hollow areas of the face to restore a smoother, more youthful appearance.

The Facial Fat Transfer Procedure

Dr. Mounsey may perform the facial fat transfer procedure in the office setting or in one of the hospitals or private clinics in the Toronto area. The procedure takes approximately one hour to complete and is often performed with local anesthesia which may be combined with sedation. During the procedure, Dr. Mounsey extracts the fat from the donor area using gentle liposuction techniques. The fat is then prepared and injected into the hollow areas of the face with a needle. Because some portion of the injected fat will be reabsorbed by the body, it is sometimes necessary to overfill the area which may create a temporarily puffy or swollen appearance.

The Facial Fat Transfer Recovery

Facial fat transfer typically involves little discomfort, though medication may be taken if necessary. Some swelling, bruising or redness may occur at both the donor and recipient sites. The redness and bruising typically fade within a few days while the swelling may remain for up to several weeks. Some patients can return to work the next day, while other patients choose to take up to a week off of work to allow the swelling to resolve. The duration of results with facial fat transfer can vary dramatically. When performed correctly, the results of fat transfer can last for years if not indefinitely.

Fat Transfer for a More Youthful Eye Appearance

Fat transfer can be used to improve the eye area, particularly the appearance of sunken eyes. On occasion and in appropriate patients, this procedure may also be able to replace the need for upper eyelid surgery or brow lift by correcting redundant skin with volume restoration. Fat transfer is an excellent procedure for restoring a natural fullness often associated with youth.
