Lipocontouring

Dr. Mounsey has extensive experience with lipocontouring. As a facial plastic surgeon, he has a thorough knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the head and neck. Prior to your procedure, Dr. Mounsey will perform a complete preoperative assessment which will include a thorough examination of the head and neck in order to determine what level of improvement can realistically be achieved. He will discuss realistic expectations, the associated risks and benefits, and he will go over pre- and postoperative care. Liposuction is best used in individuals with good skin tone and is not intended as a weight loss tool.

There are many different lipocontouring techniques used today. Liposhaving is a technique in which a soft tissue shaver is used within minimal suction to shave excess fatty deposits. Ultrasonic liposuction uses ultrasonic energy which is first applied to the fatty areas to liquefy the fat prior to removal. Tumescent liposuction is commonly used today in conjunction with many other liposuction techniques, however it is not as useful in the head and neck areas. With the tumescent technique, the fat cells are first infiltrated with a solution of saline and local anesthesia to help break up the fat deposits and decrease blood loss.

In most cases lipocontouring of the head and neck is performed with local anesthesia and IV sedation. Occasionally, general anesthesia may be used, particularly when performed with other procedures. The patients will be first be marked in the upright position. Next, very small incisions are made in inconspicuous areas in the face and neck. Through these incisions a narrow tube called a cannula is inserted and a suction syringe or pump attached to the cannula then extracts the fat cells.

After the procedure the treatment area is covered with a dressing over which an elastic dressing or facial sling is worn. The dressing is removed after two days. Patients will need to wear the elastic dressing around the clock for the first week, and then at night for the next four weeks. This will help the skin adjust to its new contours while also minimizing swelling. Patients should elevate the head and apply ice during the first few days after treatment. Some bruising and swelling may result which typically resolves within one to three weeks, and the skin may be numb for three to nine weeks. Most patients experience minimal pain. Exercise should be postponed for three weeks.

Lipocontouring results in permanent fat removal. This procedure is often combined with other procedures including chin augmentation, facelift, brow lift, eyelid surgery, cheek augmentation, or nose surgery.
