Scar Revision Improves Unsightly Scars
Many individuals are bothered by scars. When they're located on the face, however, they can be a source of self-consciousness. Scar revision is a surgical procedure which can greatly improve the appearance of facial scars and enhance one's self confidence.
There are many different scar revision techniques available. The technique that is right for you will depend on your individual scar. Dr. Robert Mounsey of Revesse of Toronto will be happy to meet with you for a consultation to discuss how scar revision can help you. It's important for patients to understand that scar revision cannot completely remove a scar but rather minimizes its appearance as much as possible.
The Scar Revision Procedure
Dr. Mounsey performs scar revision procedures in the office setting or at one of the hospitals or private clinics in Toronto which he is affiliated with. Surgical scar revision techniques are often performed with local anesthesia and sedation or with general anesthesia. Excision techniques are commonly used for scar revision. With this procedure, Dr. Mounsey makes a clean incision in the skin and removes the scar. He then meticulously closes the incision with very small stitches, resulting in a thinner, less noticeable scar. Another technique, often referred to as Z-plasty, repositions the existing scar so that it is hidden in a less conspicuous area, typically within a natural skin crease.
The Scar Revision Recovery
The recovery after surgical scar revision may involve some minor swelling and bruising. Patients may also experience some discomfort which can be alleviated with medication. Bandages may be applied after surgery and these usually remain in place for one week. The scar will likely appear red immediately after surgery but it will eventually fade to a fine line. Most patients find that they can return to work within one to two weeks.
