Question : I’m African American and considering rhinoplasty. Are there any risks that I should be aware of that are specific to African American patients?
Answer : African American patients, African Canadian patients and patients of African West Indian descent must make sure their surgeon is experienced with their skin type and their type of nose. The nasal analysis in the balancing of the nose is slightly different than a Caucasian nose. Also, the techniques used may vary since the skin may be thicker. It is also important to make sure the surgeon is able to show you what can be realistically obtained based on their experience. The good news is that people of African descent can have a very successful rhinoplasty surgery with modern techniques.
