Question : Are there any special consideration with teens undergoing otoplasty?
Answer : I like to make sure when teens are undergoing otoplasty that they evaluate it from two aspects: physical and psychological. The physical is usually very simple, just making sure that the ears are of good size and for otoplasty this is not really an issue with teens. The psychological aspect is more important. During the teenage years, it is important to make sure that the patient is psychologically stable to undergo the surgical procedure and the changes that result. Patient also must be responsible enough to attend the follow-up to make sure that the result is optimal. If the teen is not sure about the procedure, which is critical, or is not mature enough to follow through with the postoperative management, then postponement may be best until the patient is a little more mature. However, I find most of the teens that make an informed choice are very good candidates for this procedure.
