Question : Are there certain characteristics specific to the Mediterranean noses that are often addressed during rhinoplasty?
Answer : Yes. In my website, I have detailed the different ethnicities and their noses and how the noses vary. It is very important not to generalize the nose, especially in patients who are coming from North America or my international patients who travel, because there are many different cultures in different countries. A patient may come and think that their nose is Mediterranean but they may have roots in different ethnicities. Similarly, a patient may come to my practice and think that they have an Asian nose but they may have a lot of different other ethnicities in their makeup that contribute to the nasal appearance. They may have an Asian mother and a Caucasian father and the patient may think that their nose looks Asian but many of the changes that need to be done are the same changes I have used for Caucasian rhinoplasty. That’s why I’m very careful not to generalize the Mediterranean nose, but some features are more common in the Mediterranean nose such as thicker skin and maybe a stronger dorsum. These are addressed with specific rhinoplasty techniques. Because many of my patients travel from so many different countries and ethnicities, the way I approach the different ethnicities and the nose is to look at the deformities, the things that need to be corrected and the skin type and I adjust my procedure to match this.
