Question: Can you explain what a turbinectomy is?
Answer: Inside the nose, there are three small bones which are on the side of the nose. These bones are covered with mucosa. The unique feature about the mucosa is that it swells and contracts and responds to different stimuli. These are called the turbinates. If these become very, very swollen, there may be some obstruction to the airway. They also perform a very important role to humidify and warm the air that’s coming into the nose and going into the lungs. A turbinectomy is a procedure where the turbinates are reduced in size if they are too large. This can be done by a variety of ways. It can be done by cutting the turbinates, sending electrical current to the turbinates, freezing or cryotherapy, and it can also be performed with laser.
