Question : I have large ears that stick out. I’m a woman and I feel like this is particularly noticeable and unattractive. I’ve consulted with one surgeon who has said that he would just pin back the ears and not change the size or shape at all. I really have my heart set on having them smaller as well and I was wondering if this is common practice to just pin them back.
Answer : In general, if the ears are placed in a stable position in relation to the size of the head, then the appearance of natural ears is obtained. This appearance makes the ear in alignment with the face and does not distract from the other features of the face. In most patients, this is all that is necessary for improvement of the aesthetic of the ear. Many patients are surprised that the ear appears “small” when only changes the position and the shape have been made.
