Question: My daughter is 7 years old and has ears that stick out from her face. She’s always been teased about her ears. My husband and I are contemplating an ear pinning procedure. I’ve heard that the younger someone is, the easier the surgery is. Can you please tell me if this is true?
Answer: Otoplasty or reshaping ears is very common. Most surgeons like to perform this surgery before the child goes to regular full-time school, around the age of 5. As the person ages, the cartilage becomes stiffer and it becomes more challenging to create the aesthetic contours. However, all experienced ear surgeons dealing with otoplasty can perform this procedure successfully in all age ranges. In general, this procedure is well tolerated in children with very little pain and a very quick recovery.
