Every surgery requires some sort of recovery period, and cosmetic facelifts are no exception. Though the facelift is an effective procedure for restoring youth to the face, it is often associated with a fairly intensive healing process, depending on the type and intensity of the lift being performed. Though it can be difficult and frustrating to suspend certain activities during the healing process, it’s extremely important to be patient and careful during the recovery period to ensure the best chance of a superior outcome. If you’re considering facelift surgery, here are a few things you’ll want to avoid during your recovery.
Hot Water and Steam
Your face and skin will be sensitive following a facelift, and if you typically take very hot and steamy baths and showers, you’ll need to switch to warm water for a few weeks. You should also avoid saunas, steam rooms, and other similar activities.
If you’re a smoker, you’ll need to quit several weeks or months before the surgery, but it’s also important to stay off cigarettes after the procedure as well. Substances such as alcohol and cigarettes inhibit healing and promote poor outcomes.
Lifting & Bending
Your doctor will advise you on how soon you can start lifting and bending. This is standard for many surgeries, and should be taken seriously.
Makeup & Sun Exposure
While it might be tempting to cover up post-op bruising with makeup, it’s usually better to just give your skin time to heal on its own before putting on makeup. If you must wear makeup, consult with your surgeon before the surgery to get his or her opinion. It’s also especially important to protect your skin from the elements. Sun can be particularly harsh on healing skin, so wear a hat and use sunscreen.
Look for Abnormalities
Your doctor will advise you before the surgery on what to expect from your recovery period. If you notice anything during healing that concerns you, be sure to contact your surgeon.
