Question : My husband and I are considering otoplasty for our 5-year-old son. I’ve read that a bandage stays on the head for a while after surgery. How are you supposed to keep this on a 5-year-old?
Answer : After otoplasty surgery, he will have a bandage on the head and I remove this within 24 hours and inspect the ears and reapply the same bandage. I will leave this on for another 48 hours and then this bandage is removed. At that time, I have the patient wear a headband on the ears at night. This gives a very good result and the children will tolerate this. I agree that leaving the bandage on too long does cause a lot of problems.
