Plastic surgery has always been subject to a certain amount of stigma, but as procedures like rhinoplasty get more and more popular, the stigma is beginning to fall away. While once, the overwhelming majority of plastic surgery patients were female, more men are beginning to request some of the most popular procedures, such as rhinoplasty, liposuction, and non-surgical treatments. So what’s behind the trend of more men undergoing rhinoplasty?
Mainstream Acceptance & Media Influences
Actors and other celebrities have helped pave the way for mainstream acceptance of cosmetic surgery, and may be part of the reason for more men seeking rhinoplasty surgery. In addition to seeing the “ideal man” portrayed in the media, men can now have cosmetic surgery without suffering from the former stigma attached to undergoing such procedures.
With the competitive job market these days, people are doing whatever they can to get an edge over their peers. According to Dr. Michael Yaremchuk, chief of craniofacial surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, this can mean plastic surgery: “A certain amount of men want to be more competitive in the workplace and work market, and they feel that it’s important for them to look younger and more attractive just so they can compete with younger people. …There used to be somewhat of a taboo on male cosmetic surgery, and now it’s certainly more accepted.” Dr. Yaremchuk says men are usually seeking the strong jaw, chin, and nose combination that are considered attractive and desirable.
As with fashions, noses go in and out of style. In the past, the smaller, more delicate nose and chin combo was the most popular look for men undergoing rhinoplasty. More recently, a trend toward “strong” features has reemerged, along with the trend of individuality. Many men don’t want their nose to look too perfect. It’s common for a surgeon to leave a small quirk or two to retain individuality and avoid looking “overdone”.
Be Aware of the Differences
If you’re a man considering rhinoplasty, it’s important to be informed and learn as much as you can about the procedure. You should research the differences between male and female rhinoplasty, and consult with surgeons who specialize in the procedure and have experience working with male noses. During your consultations, ask questions and make sure you and your prospective surgeons are on the same page about what you want.
