Question : My son is prone to ear infections. He always has been. Will otoplasty affect this in any way?
Answer : An otoplasty surgery will not have any effect on his ear infections. It is important to make sure that your son is seen by a competent, board-certified otolaryngologist – head and neck surgeon to see whether or not there are any underlying factors which can be modified to improve ear infections. Once this is done and the ear infections are controlled, otoplasty may be a very good option to improve the symmetry and the balance of the ear. Because the otoplastic surgery does not affect the ear canal, it will not affect the ear infection. Quite often, a facial plastic surgeon is board-certified both in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery and facial plastic surgery and they can be a good choice for otoplasty.
