Looking younger can be achieved with both surgical and non-surgical procedures. There are many easy and hassle-free options available to smooth and tighten the skin for a youthful glow and increased self-confidence.
Dermal fillers are a great option for those who do not want to undergo a surgical procedure. There are various forms of dermal fillers available that involve little to no recovery time. These are great options for those with busy lives who want to get rid of lines and wrinkles and plump specific areas of the face. Surgical options can also greatly improve the face and create a vibrant appearance. Face lift procedures can produce dramatic results though they do require recovery time. The eyelid lift also creates a great impact but with less downtime.
Dermal fillers are a great way to treat wrinkles and restore lost volume. There are a variety of FDA-approved fillers available which are injected into the facial area in the desired location. The injections can be completed in an office setting in a very short, pain-free visit using fine needles. Topical anesthesia is available for increased comfort. Filler injections need to be repeated every six to nine months or so in order to maintain results. For those seeking a more permanent solution, fat injection may be a better option.
Types of Dermal Fillers
There are a variety of dermal fillers available for use depending on the individual patient’s goals and desires. Two commonly used fillers include Restylane and Juvederm.
Restylane is a hyaluronic acid filler that is typically injected after a topical anesthesia is applied to the area. This filler is popular for those who not only want to smooth wrinkles and restore volume loss but for those seeking fuller lips as well. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the human body. Injections are typically needed twice a year.
Juvederm is also made of hyaluronic acid and has a smooth consistency ideal for treating lines and wrinkles and restoring lost volume. Juvederm is safe for many areas of the face, including around the eyes. Hyaluronic acid is safe for all ethnicities and can be used in place of rhinoplasty procedures in some cases to reshape the nose.
If you’re seeking a more natural option, consider fat injections. Also known as lipoinjection, this procedure allows an individual to use their own fat from one area of the body for transfer into the desired location. Fat injections can restore volume in the facial area. They are often used in the chin, forehead, jawline, cheeks, temples, and in between the eyebrows. The transferred fat can eliminate wrinkles and fill depressed areas.
Fat injections can even be utilized on other areas of the body such as the breasts. The fat transfer appears natural because it is from a natural substance in the body. The fat can be taken from the abdomen, buttocks, or thighs. Other areas of the body with excess fat may also be used as the donor site. Fat injections can be a great option if a dermal filler is not appealing to you. They also tend to last longer than dermal fillers.
A facelift procedure can achieve many of your personal appearance goals with just one simple procedure. The surgery typically targets the lower face and neck which may include the extra skin on the jaw line, double chins, fine lines, folds on the neck, and folds on the lower face. The skin that is droopy or saggy can easily be removed to create a smooth and youthful appearance. This can also assist in removing wrinkles and extra folds. A common option during facelift procedures is to undergo an additional neck procedure. These are often completed together to ensure that the neck and face are both tight and smooth, creating a balanced appearance.
The Facelift Consultation
When deciding to have a facelift procedure, it is important that a consultation is scheduled. The patient should be aware of the realistic possibilities that a facelift can achieve and should be in good physical and mental health. It is important that you and your surgeon understand your wants and needs from the procedure and that they are realistic. The consultation will also allow a determination to be made of whether a mini facelift or full facelift will be needed. This will influence where the incisions are made and how the skin will be pulled. The placement of the incisions will also be contingent upon the condition of the skin.
The Facelift Procedure
A traditional facelift is more invasive and will require a longer recovery time than a mini facelift. However, the results often last ten years or longer and can be very dramatic. Incisions for the facelift may vary but are generally located around the temple in the hairline and continue in front of and behind the ear to the back of the scalp. General anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation may be used.
Working through the incision, the skin can be pulled, moved, and repositioned on the lower face and and neck. Extra skin will be removed. A tube will be placed underneath the chin for drainage purposes. The chin and incisions will be sutured and bandaged once the skin has been placed in the desired locations.
The Facelift Recovery
Patients can expect some discomfort after the facelift surgery. Medications can be provided for relief. In addition, the face will be bruised and swollen. Drainage fluid may be visible and the bandaging will need to be changed on a regular basis. To minimize the risk of infection, care will need to be taken to keep the wounds clean as they heal.
Regular activities can be resumed after two weeks, but exercise should still be avoided. Remaining in the sun for long periods of time should also be avoided. The procedure may require a full six months to heal, and the scarring should fade after one year.
The Mini Facelift
A mini facelift is not as invasive as a traditional facelift and involves fewer incisions. This also means that the recovery time is shorter and fewer scars will be left. The incisions that are placed can reduce the sagging and drooping of the face and create a smooth surface. The extra skin will not be eliminated in a mini facelift, and extra folds of skin may remain. For this reason, the mini facelift is best for individuals with less extensive signs of aging. The mini facelift will last for approximately five years. If only a few areas of concern exist, then a mini facelift can be a great option!
Blepharoplasty is more commonly known as eyelid surgery. This procedure can greatly improve the appearance of the eye area. This, in turn, can help to rejuvenate the entire face. As we age, the eyelids can appear tired, droopy, or sad. Restoring the eyelids can take years off your appearance and restore a brighter, rejuvenated appearance.
The Blepharoplasty Procedure
Eyelid surgery can be completed on both the upper and lower eyelids. The procedure takes one to three hours to complete and anesthesia will be administered. The incisions will not be visible after the surgery as they will be placed in the natural creases of the upper eyelid or along the lash line of the lower lid. Excess tissue will be removed from the eyelids which will make them appear brighter and more alert. After the incisions are closed they will be bandaged. Swelling and bruising will occur for a few days and applying cold compresses to the area will help to reduce it. After two to four weeks, the eyelids will begin to appear normal with the bruising and soreness fading. Most patients can return to work after one week of the surgery.
