Question: I am a twenty-three- year-old African American and I’ve always felt that my lips are too big. Would I be able to reduce the size of my lips without losing their shape?
Answer: There’s a procedure available called reduction cheiloplasty which can reduce the size of your lips while maintaining their shape. Consult with an experienced facial plastic surgeon to determine whether or not this procedure is right for you. My personal philosophy with lips is that we want to retain a natural ethnicity. I personally do not perform lip reduction procedures unless there is an indication to do so, such as previous trauma to the lip or infection of the lip or an allergic reaction which is resolved or causing swelling of the lip. This frequently will result in unusual swelling or diffuse swellings of the lip or severe asymmetries. The goal is to create natural appearing patients. Unnaturally reduced lips in patients of African American heritage immediately draw attention to their lips and due to this unnatural appearance the patient is unable to achieve their aesthetic goal. There’s a lack of harmony in the face and a lack of balance and the symmetry. Therefore, it’s very important to make sure that if you require a reduction cheiloplasty or lip reduction that it is performed to improve symmetry due to previous trauma or to reduce lips which have been swollen due to allergic reaction.
