Question: I have a pixie ear and would like to know if and how this can be fixed. Only one ear is affected so could it be made to match my normal ear?
Answer: Pixie ears are one type of appearance of the ear which many patients would like to change. The procedure to reshape the ear is called otoplasty. It is very important in otoplasty to make sure that the ears become symmetrical. Depending on how your ears look, this may involve operating only on the ear that you are concerned about to bring it to the right appearance and shape. This is done using a variety of suture techniques and may or may not involve incisions. However, it is very important to have your ears evaluated by an experienced facial plastic surgeon. Quite often the patient may complain of one ear and may not aware that the other ear also has abnormalities which would need to be corrected to make the ears symmetrical. This can only be determined by an accurate diagnosis by an experienced facial plastic surgeon.
