Question: Are there any fillers that provide permanent or long lasting results? And what can they be used for?
Answer: Fillers can be broadly divided in two groups: permanent fillers and non-permanent fillers. The advantage of using a permanent filler is that it stays in place forever. The disadvantage of using a permanent filler is that once it is placed it cannot be easily removed. The only option for removing it may be a surgical procedure to actually incise and remove this. So the challenge with permanent fillers is that once they are in place, if the patient in some later stage of their life decides they want to change this or they are not happy with what it looks like, it is very difficult to remove a permanent filler. There are also fillers which are longer lasting. These fillers eventually dissolve but they take a longer time. The advantage of using these fillers is that they are not a permanent filler so if the patient is not happy eventually with the result, the filler would be removed by the body but it also lasts long enough. So the result is sustainable and the patient does not have to keep having multiple procedures in that short period of time. There are many, many fillers available and it is best to consult with an experienced facial plastic surgeon and determine which filler is best for you.
